How To Play Chess - Basics Part 1

ChessTo Start : Chess is played by two players on a checkered board with 64 spaces. Each player has 16 pieces as follows :-


8 Pawns each
2 knights each
2 bishops each
2 rooks each
1 queen and 1 king each

At the start of the game the pieces are set up as shown in figure 1.The set-up of the board is seen below. It follows the basic format where the bottom left hand corner is always black, and the queen is always on the same color (i.e. the White Queen goes on the White square). There are different variations for the board set-up depending on the type of chess that is being played, but I am not going to get into those. The white player moves first and then the players move alternately.

Movement of Pieces: The king moves one space in any direction. See fig.2.

The King is the piece that you are trying to capture from your opponent. This piece is not used too often. The king cannot put the other king into check.
